This research contributes in the field of consumer behavior through the study of the relationship between the search information theory from the subjective perspective of the perceived ability to search for information and consumer needs. The possibility of having the need for cognition as a mediating variable is explored evaluating it from a system of structural equations. A sample of 408 Spanish-speaking people was used to analyze the proposed relationships. The results show that consumer needs have a direct and positive relationship with need for cognition and with perception of the ability to search for information. In the proposed theoretical models, the relationship between need for cognition construct and the perception of the ability to search for information is not significant. Initial models were modified which have consumer needs only relate to need for cognition and not to perception of the ability to search for information. In the new models, relationship of need for cognition with perception is significant and positive.
