Del pintor devoto al pintor manierista: revisión historiográfica de la vida y obra de Fray Pedro Bedón durante su visita al Nuevo Reino de Granada (1593-1597)

Abstract

Esta investigación se ocupa de la revisión historiográfica de la vida y obra de Fray Pedro Bedón (Quito 1556-1621). En especial, se concentra en los textos que dan cuenta de la presencia del artista dominico en el Nuevo Reino de Granada (1593-1597), pues dichos documentos evidencian un cambio de interés en la construcción de la imagen del artista quiteño. Esta variación se observa desde el siglo XVII, en el que prevalece la imagen del pintor devoto, hasta el siglo XXI, en el que sobresale la del pintor manierista. Al revisar la producción bibliográfica sobre Bedón, advertí que había un vacío de conocimiento y que era necesario abordar, por primera vez, un estudio dedicado a la historiografía del artista a través de una franja temporal de 333 años que cubra los espacios geográficos de Perú, Colombia y Ecuador.

This research deals with the historiographic review of the life and work of Fray Pedro Bedon (Quito 1556-1621). In particular, it focuses on the texts that account for the presence of the dominican artist in the New Kingdom of Granada (1593-1597), since these documents show a change of interest in the construction of the Quito artist's image. This variation is observed from the 17th century, in which the image of the devout painter prevails, until the 21st century, in which the mannerist painter stands out. When reviewing the bibliographic production on Bedon, I noticed that there was a knowledge gap and that it was necessary to address, for the first time, a study dedicated to the historiography of the artist through a 333-year time slot that covers the geographical spaces of Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.
