Esta investigación examina dos programas de educación superior afines al sector agrícola que han emergido como estrategia para aportar al desarrollo rural a través de la mitigación de la migración de jóvenes rurales a centros urbanos. A partir del estudio de los programas de Utopía (Colombia) y EARTH (Costa Rica) desde un marco conceptual interdisciplinario que articula los conceptos de bienestar social, agencia y capital social, se identifican las perspectivas de bienestar de los estudiantes y se analizan las causas que llevan a los jóvenes a abandonar sus lugares de origen. Resumen
This research examines two higher education programs in the agricultural sector that have emerged as strategies to contribute to rural development by mitigating the migration of rural youth to urban centers. Building from the study of the Utopia (Colombia) and EARTH (Costa Rica) education programs and an interdisciplinary conceptual framework that draws on social wellbeing, agency and social capital, I identified and analyzed the wellbeing perspectives of the students and the causes that lead young people to leave their places of origin. I employed a comparative case study strategy approaches of inquiry that included document review, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and visual ethnography, with fieldwork conducted in September 2016.This research highlights the role higher education has in mitigating youth rural-urban migration and contributes to the understanding of how their own wellbeing, the resources that are key for their permanence in their areas of origin and the consolidation of social capital in their territories.
