La marcha del miembro inferior amputado está relacionada con la rigidez lineal y la rigidez angular del pie protésico, donde la última mencionada describe la relación entre el torque del tobillo y la progresión angular de la tibia sobre el pie. Hay mucha información sobre cómo estimar la rigidez lineal de los pies protésicos, pero pocos datos sobre la rigidez angular. El objetivo de este estudio fue diseñar y evaluar un método novedoso para evaluar la rigidez angular de los pies protésicos utilizando técnicas FEA. Se simuló el comportamiento de un pie protésico mientras se realizaba la fase de apoyo (con descriptores cinemáticos y cinéticos conocidos de la marcha) para tres materiales diferentes. Las simulaciones se definieron de manera que replicaran las cargas impuestas en un ciclo de marcha. La rigidez angular se calculó en función del tiempo de la fase de apoyo midiendo el torque del tobillo y la deformación angular del pie protésico en varios momentos de tiempo. El comportamiento de torque calculado del pie protésico mostró un comportamiento similar al reportado en la literatura para un tobillo anatómico durante la fase de apoyo. El método propuesto es útil para calcular la rigidez angular como índice de rendimiento para un pie protésico durante su proceso de diseño.

Lower limb amputee gait is related to the linear stiffness and the angular stiffness of the prosthetic foot, where the last mentioned describes the relation between ankle torque and angular progression of the shank over the foot. There is a lot of information on how to estimate linear stiffness of prosthetic feet, but little data on angular stiffness. The objective of this study was to design and evaluate a novel method to evaluate the angular stiffness of prosthetic feet using FEA techniques. The behaviour of one prosthetic foot while performing the stance phase was simulated (with known kinematic and kinetic descriptors of gait) for three different materials. The simulations were defined in a way that replicated the loads imposed in a gait cycle. Angular stiffness was calculated as a function of the time of the stance phase by measuring the ankle torque and angular deformation of the prosthetic feet for several times. The computed ankle torque behaviour of the prosthetic foot showed a similar to that reported in the literature for an anatomical ankle during stance phase. The proposes method is useful to compute the angular stiffness as a performance index for a prosthetic feet during its design process.
